The new Series 2, Phonics SuperDeck Assortment complements our Series 1 version with all new words, yet you can still play the same games that students love such as Go Fish, Memory and Bingo.  Plus you can also play Crazy 8’s.  They are a fun and effective way to teach and practice phonics skills.

This SuperDeck includes all new words for each of the 5 phonemic patterns in our Series 2 product line and it also includes two Review Phonetic Patterns SuperDecks.

What are Hi-Lo Phonics and Fluency SuperDecks? All Hi-Lo SuperDecks are research-based, individual card decks rooted in the Orton-Gillingham approach, explicitly designed to boost decoding and fluency through active engagement, keeping students practicing for longer periods, which increases reading success. The “purposeful, playful practice” provided by Hi-Lo SuperDecks is used from pre-K through higher grades, often with older, struggling readers, to help them avoid embarrassment from materials intended for younger children.

What are the benefits of Hi-Lo SuperDecks? They are high-engagement/high-interest reading resources that turn learning into a game, helping reduce anxiety and increase focus for struggling readers. They are low-readability/skill-level designed for focused, intentional practice in phonics and fluency, allowing students to master foundational skills regardless of their age.

Series 2 SuperDecks are played just like regular playing cards, but instead of numbers and symbols, it uses phonics words just like Series 1 SuperDecks. This makes them a great way to get students practicing their phonics skills without even realizing it!

The new Series 2, Phonics SuperDecks are available for CVC, VCE, Long Vowel Digraphs, R-Controlled, Diphthongs, and 2 new “Review Phonemic Patterns” decks which review all five patterns in each deck.  If you’re not sure where to begin with your student, simply download our free Phonics Assessment to evaluate their level.  Click here to download the Assessment.

How do teachers/tutors/parents use Hi-Lo SuperDecks? Hi-Lo SuperDecks are used one-to-one and in small groups, and some games lend themselves well to a full class, such as Write-in-Bingo for decoding and encoding practice.

Here’s how it works:

1.        Assess: The teacher assesses the student(s) using the easy and quick downloadable Strong Learning Phonics Assessment found HERE to determine which phoneme the student(s) need to learn.

2.        Select and Play:  The teacher selects the appropriate Phonics SuperDeck and plays Memory, followed by Go Fish. Download Game directions.

3.        Unlimited Purposeful Practice:  During the following reading sessions or free time, the student selects other games to play. Directions for up to 15 games are available at Stronglearning.com.  It does not matter which game the student selects, even if it’s the same game repeatedly, because all the games provide the same purposeful practice to learn that phoneme.

4.        Reassess: Once the student can read the Word List from that SuperDeck automatically, the teacher proceeds to the next phoneme they need to learn, following the sequence on the Phonics Assessment.

5.        **Optional: Before moving onto the next phoneme, the student plays the same games with the companion Hi-Lo Fluency SuperDeck to apply that phoneme in reading a short sentence. There are four benefits of doing so: 1) Besides reading an individual word following the phonetic pattern, the student practices reading sight words, 2) the student is learning new vocabulary words, 3) the student’s fluency is improving, 4) the student’s anxiety about reading sentences decreases, preparing them to move onto books.

How to purchase Hi-Lo SuperDecks: SuperDecks may be bought individually or in assortments at a lower cost per deck. If you’re a tutor, be sure to sign up for the tutor discount, which applies to every purchase, whether it’s an individual SuperDeck or an assortment of SuperDecks.
